In Edinburgh, Scotland, there is a mediaeval castle called Edinburgh Castle. It is situated on Castle Rock, which has been home to people since at least the Iron Age, though it is unknown what kind of early community it was. Since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, there has been a royal castle on the rock, and the location remained a royal home until 1633. The castle's residential use started to decrease starting in the 15th century, and by the 17th century, it was mostly being utilised as a military barracks with a sizable garrison. From the early 19th century onward, its significance as a piece of Scotland's national history was progressively acknowledged, and during the following 150 years, numerous restoration initiatives have been carried out.
